Our Learning September 27-October 1: 

Items to note:

 - Orange Shirt Day is a day when we honor Indigenous children of the residential school system and the impact this system had on Indigenous communities for more than a century in Canada. Banff Elementary School  will be recognizing this day on Wednesday, September 29. Students and staff are encouraged to wear an orange shirt on Wednesday. 

-In support of the calls to action for Truth and Reconciliation our school will be closed on Thursday, September 30. On Wednesday, September 29 our whole school will be working on learning activities related to Truth and Reconciliation. 

-Friday is a half day

- Students who had photos taken on September 15 will have their picture proofs sent home on Monday. The office has asked that we share this message with you - ordering pictures online is the preferred method. There are more options and orders are delivered faster. Place your order by October 5 to avoid shipping and handling fees. Picture retake day is November 3.

Our Learning:

Literacy - we will continue with our novel study Wonder and in writing will be working on a dress ups assignment as well as learning around Truth and Reconciliation.  Last Thursday, your child completed their first graded writing assignment. A copy of the rubric can be found in their google classroom along with a simple format for a self assessment. As the year progresses we will build our self assessment skills. I will mark their writing using the rubric and this should be posted in their google classroom at the start of the week.   

Numeracy - we will be working on writing equations and then using pictorial or concrete representations to solve the equations. 

Science - we will be on identifying characteristics of trees found in our local environment as well as interpreting the growth patterns of a tree. 

Social - our week´s learning in social will be focused on our Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. This is an area of learning that becomes a concept that we refer back to as the year progresses. 

Thought book  - this week students will have the opportunity to share with the class ¨where they stand¨ on issues. The purpose of this activity is to help build viewpoints and to understand varying perspectives which is a theme of our social studies learning in grade 6. The statements that students will form a viewpoint on can be found in your child's google classroom under the thought book folder in case you are interested in looking at them also and discussing them with your child. 

Weekly math homework - our focus this week with our weekly homework will be on multiplication.
